CROSSING THE BORDERS OF FAITH - AT
HOME WITH UPIC

I met christians on the other side who labour not with
their lips but with their lives.
In this home where I found myself love and fellowship
I have tasted in a deep and personal way.

A group of people from all over the world, willing and
and attentive to my spiritual needs and care how I feel.
Away from home I found a family.
What a faith alive and active.

Every Sunday is fresh and new for me.
Ministers of hospitality, witnesses and heralds of
Evangelization present all around.
What a communion, so real.
When I dozed and stumbled, supple hands touced me,
I stood erect.
Oh how my life changed.

Christians true to their name, pray and witness
like the early Church.
University Parish International Community,
Leuven, Catholic in faith and rooted in love.
Come to UPIC depressed and dejected and
You will return refreshed and relieved.
Oh what a place to pray.

Amazed at the gesture of friendship and bond
of love and solidarity, someone whispered to me:
"...one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God is
Father of all..."
Say it aloud, let me hear, now I know why you care.

SUNDAY SNACK FOR A CAUSE: A HUGE SUCCESS!!!

SUNDAY SNACK FOR A CAUSE: A HUGE SUCCESS!!!
September 26, 2009 was an unforgettable day for many Filipinos living in Metro Manila. It was the day typhoon Ketsana brought non-stop rain for the whole day, amounting to a month’s rain level and resulting to immense flooding in almost 80% of the metropolis in so short a time. More than 250 people died, thousands of families were displaced, and many lost their homes and properties. The images of this immense flood and the havoc it wrecked, not seen in the last 40 years in the National Capital Region of the Philippines, filled television and computer screens world wide. There is no question; this is one of the concrete effects of global warming. For us Filipino students here in Leuven, the devastation was truly a shock especially because some of the victims and survivors were known to us. The sheer immensity of the damage was enough to spur us to be in solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters. Hence, a charity event for the victims of Tropical Storm Ketsana was launched dubbed “Sunday Snack for a Cause,” spearheaded by the Filipino Union of Students in Europe (FUSE)-Leuven headed this year by Maria Lovelyn Paclibar (Philosophy), Anne Mendoza and Mario Masangcay (both from Theology). October 4, 2009 was also an unforgettable day. It was an afternoon of solidarity and one that moved from misa (Mass) to mesa (dining table). International friends and fellow Filipinos came to join us at the Multipurpose Hall of Pangaea at 3:00 pm. As we usually do in the Philippines, we started with a Eucharistic celebration. After the homily, a video footage of the situation at home was shown. While the communion was going on, the preparation of the snack to be shared was also ongoing. After the mass, the students and friends served everyone with well-loved snacks from the Philippines like pancit (noodles), lumpia (spring rolls), and cassava cake which they themselves made. Drinks were also passed around while stories were exchanged. It reflects what all Filipinos and their friends know which Fr. Mario articulated in his homily: “In the midst of life’s tensions and distress, we Filipinos survive and cope by praying-eating-chatting together. Strange as it may be for others, this is the Filipino way of solidarity.” The stub for the Sunday Snack for a Cause showed how for the 10€ that each one shared that day, up to seven families could be fed in a day. Many of the guests added their voluntary donations. From this activity, we gather 930.00 € and the individual donations of those who came and those who sent their contribution amounted to 774.35 €. In the spirit of bayanihan (solidarity), many others also helped us. From Filipiniana EU we received 134.90. From the Thai House collection, we were given 200.20 € and from the University Parish International Community where the fund drive was also announced, the parishioners generously offered the day’s collection which amounted 460.95 €. The gross amount from all the contributions was 2,500.40 €. Since all the preparatory work was done by the students and their friends for free, the expenses were mostly limited to the ingredients for the food and drinks, 210.95€. The net amount collected was 2,290.15 €. The Sunday Snack for a Cause was a huge success because of the support of so many! “In order to extend our help to as many Filipino families as possible, we have decided to divide this amount to two organizations that are actively conducting relief operations to the flood victims: Simbahang Lingkod Bayan and Redemptorist Fathers Solidarity Group,” the students leaders informed us. This amount will be sent to the beneficiaries not later than October 6, 2009. We will be happy to give you who supported us an update once our beneficiaries send their certification of receipt and acknowledgement. While some of the pledges and donations are yet to be received and accounted for, these contributions will be sent by October 14, 2009. They can send their donations through the FUSE coordinators: Fr. The Filipino students and the Filipino people are grateful and we say: “Maraming-maraming salamat po!” May God who cannot be outdone in generosity bless us all just as we all learn from this event and be more responsible for the only one earth that we have and for good of the present and future generations. - Ma.
